MINIX Cars were introduced in 1964 by Tri-ang for use with their model railway system , therefore all the vehicles were consistent to OO Scale - 1/76 ,with one exception , the AEC single deck bus which was made to the smaller scale of 1/135 so that it could fit into the standard generic box produced for the models (see below) .

There were seventeen different models produced plus some variations on them for playsets (see the Packaging Page for further details). Each model was produced in a variety of colours (see Models Listing for further details).
The vehicles were produced with chrome bases which gave a realistic look to bumpers and grilles , later models were also fitted with interiors.
After 1972 , as a cost cutting measure bases were no longer chromed , White and then grey bases were used , these models were no longer available individually but were sold as part of train sets or as loads for wagons.
Different plastic was also used for the models giving a much "cheaper" look , several were discontinued. At the same time wheels changed from chrome to a very cheap looking black. As a result of all this change the latter models are referred to by collectors as "Post '72". Examples can be found with chrome bases and the Post '72 black wheels fitted (see below) , such models are interesting to the collector but not very valuable as they could easily be "manufactured" by swapping components (Most MINIX cars can be pulled apart fairly easily and reassembled). The Vauxhall Viva pictured here is original.

MINIX cars had been phased out by the late 1970's , but in 1980 a "Silcock Express" Car transporter was issued by Hornby Hobbies , the new car for this set , the Ford Sierra was not available at the time of production , so 16 ex-MINIX cars were issued in the set , there were 4 of each colour Red, Green , Blue and Yellow of the old #7 Sunbeam Alpine (see below) . This set numbered R666 , was issued for just one year. Note the cars now have blacked out windows and no interior.
