Wanko Level Crossing Accident 2001.

On Monday the 25th of June 2001, a loaded goods train bound for Quilpie was involved in a level crossing accident with a double road-train traveling towards Charleville. The incident occurred at approximately 11.52 am at a road crossing at Wanko on the Diamantina Development Road.

The driver of the road-train escaped with minor injuries while one of the train drivers had a suspected broken arm and the other suffered a severe gash to the knee. Considering the extent of damage to the road-train and locomotives all drivers were extremely lucky.

A fire was ignited on impact, engulfing the road-train and lead locomotive 1728D. The trailing locomotive 1726D although extensively damaged, was not affected by fire to a great extent.

Fifteen of the eighty head of cattle carried by the road-train were destroyed in the accident while the remainder escaped into the surrounding property. The road was reopened the next day after repairs to the road crossing and track were completed.
